KIERAN 'Fraggie Murphy' will captain the Cork hurlers in 2010. The appointment of the Sarsfields forward was announced this week, and he replaces John Gardiner, who skippered the team for the past two years.
Murphy becomes only the second player to be chosen since the decision was made to alter the method of appointing captains in 2007. Prior to that the county champions had the right to appoint the captain of both county teams, but the task was entrusted to the team management two years ago. Gardiner and Graham Canty were the first two players to be chosen under the new system by Gerald McCarthy and Conor Counihan respectively. Click here for more.
CHANGING OF THE GUARD
Bertie Og Murphy has decided to step down as Senior Hurling Manager for the coming year. The club owes a huge debt of gratitude to Bertie Og and his entire management team for overseeing our most successful period over the past 2 years. Winning the County title in 2008 and runners up in 2009 has been a huge achievement and hopefully has laid the foundation for future success in the coming years. Our new manager will be selected at the forthcoming Annual General Meeting on Jan 10th. Linked below is footage from Bertie Ogs 96fm award.

The Juvenile Club recorded a very significant double with both our Under 11 teams winning their respective league finals over the same weekend. Both teams at the start of the competitions were split evenly but regardless, still managed to beat all opponents at A grade level. A fantastic achievement! Well done to everyone involved. Our Annual Bag Packing at Ryans Supervalu will take place on Thurs 12th, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th of November.
The opening round of the Evening Echo sponsored county U21 “A” hurling championship took place on Saturday afternoon with defending champions Glen Rovers facing Imokilly Champions, Sarsfields in the second game at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Sarsfields, fielding six of the side defeated in the county senior final on the previous Sunday, were also anxious to put last year’s defeat to Glen Rovers behind them, so they had plenty to motivate them as they went into this game in a positive mood. Glen Rovers also had plenty of quality players in their side with Cork star Patrick Horgan lining out at full forward. Click here for more.
Those who had thought that Cork had seen the end of Newtownshandrum and their running game, a style that had so divided the county, were proved wrong yesterday in Páirc Uí Chaoimh – emphatically wrong. Sarsfields were reigning Cork hurling champions, had powered their way back to this final again in imperious fashion. On the other side of the draw, however, Newtownshandrum too had been doing the business, Glen Rovers (twice), UCC and the Barrs all clinically put to the sword. Clearly then these were the two best teams in Cork, and by some distance; the question to be decided yesterday was, who was top dog? From a Cork hurling perspective, however, the bigger question to be decided was this – which style would come out on top, the traditional direct Cork style as favoured by Sars, or the much-derided possession-running game perfected by the north Cork club over the last decade?

Intermediate Camogie County Final
Clonakilty 2-11 Sarsfields 1-08
Clonakilty came out on top in this final at Castle Road on Sunday. The Sars girls knew they had a tough task entering this match as Clonakilty had already annexed the county junior ladies football title this year. Sars got off to a good start when Rita Crowley pointed. Clon powered into the game and worked two goals. Shirley Crowley repsonded with a goal for Sars on the stroke of half time, leaving the score 2-8 to 1-5. Sars playing with the wind in the second half kept working hard. The goal that Sars needed never came as Clonakilty's packed defence held tight.
The Sars girls can feel proud of their achievements this year, having steped up in grade from junior. The good performances during the year of underage players such as Isobelle Kearney, Rita Crowley, Aisling Whooley, Orlaith Keane, Yvonne O'Callaghan, Laura Barry, Emer O'Connell, Nicole Hickey, and Mairead O'Farrell means that the future looks bright. Hopefully the girls can continue their rise and go one step better next year. Click here for a match report.
THEY SAY winning is a habit and that certainly is the case down in Glanmire over the past two years.
Nine championship matches, nine wins and now just Newtown stand between Sarsfield's and retaining the Evening Echo Senior Hurling Championship. Sars had gone a painful 51 rears without a senior county before last year's breakthrough but it was the events of 2007 that lay the groundwork for their epic 2008 season, and subsequent push towards two-in-a-row this summer. The importance of securing the 2007 Ulster Bank Premier Minor County, which they defended last year, to their resurgence has been well documented but according to coach Bertie Óg Murphy, the 2007 All-Ireland sevens tournament also gave them a platform for glory. HAVING made his debut in 2000, Ray Ryan is one of the most experienced players on the Sarsfields senior
hurling team.
For eight of those years, he toiled with little reward but last time around 51 years without senior success were finally ended as Sars beat Bride Rovers to claim the title. Now they are back in the decider against Newtownshandrum and Ryan has no doubt the current side is the best he has played on for the club, simply because there is such a good spread of quality, leading to extremely tough competition for places.
"I've played with fantastic players all through my career," Ryan says, "but we have 25, 30 fellas here who are all fantastic, you could play any 15 and the team wouldn't weaken at all. "We have fantastic subs, and it's brilliant to know that if you're not playing well or the fella outside you isn't playing well or a fella up the field isn't playing well, that someone can come on and it won't weaken the team." To emphasise the point, he lists several players who did not start in the semi-final win over CIT, many of whom were getting their first senior run of the year as they had been part of the club's junior side which reached the East Cork JAHC final. Click here to read more.
The county final has now been fixed for Sunday 11th October @ 12 pm in the Cork Camogie grounds, Castle Road, Blackrock. The change of date is due to a wedding in the Clonakilty camp. The Sars girls are looking for a massive support from the Sars faithful. Supporters can have a great day out attending the camogie final before travelling on to the hurling final in Pairc Ui Caoimh. The Sars girls have given fantastic entertainment to their supporters all year. The round robin clash with Clonakilty earlier in the year in Brinny finished all square, after a nail biting hours action. We wish the girls the very best of luck.
Well done to the Sars girls who progressed to the county final after overcoming a stiff test from Tracton on Saturday evening in Blackrock. Sars got off to a good start when Orla Barry goaled after seven minutes. Tracton responded with a pointed free. Sustained Sars pressure resulted in a 45 which Emer O'Farrell pointed. Back came Tracton with a goal and a point from open play. Emer O'Farrell levelled it on the stroke of half time with an expertly taken free. Tracton came out after half time with all guns blazing and raced into a two point lead. Credit to the Sars girls who kept working hard and their endeavours were rewarded when Emer O'Farrell sent a 21 yard free to the net. Rita Crowley extended the Sars lead with a well taken point.
Back came Tracton with two points to leave the minimum between the sides. Aisling Whooley who was Sars best forward on the evening was fouled in the small parallelogram. Emer O'Farrell was desperately unlucky with the resulting penalty, the ball striking the crossbar and post before going wide. Shirley Crowley who was now making good progress on the flank for Sars added a point with less than two minutes remaining. The Sars faithful had to endure a tense few minutes as Tracton attacked.
When Margaret Lynch was fouled when coming out of defence with the sliothar, Sars were able to lift the siege and the game was won on a final score of 2-6 to 1-7. Edel Murphy was the star performer for the Sars girls, and was ably assisted by Orla Butler, Emer O'Connell, Catriona Barry and Aisling Whooley. Sars now have a week to prepare for the county final against Clonakilty which will take place at the Cork Camogie Grounds, Castle Road, Blackrock.
Sarsfields will face Tracton in the county semi final at the Cork camogie grounds in Blackrock on Saturday 3rd October @ 4.30 pm. Sars qualified for the semi final by beating an understrength Tracton side at the same venue last week in their final round robin game. Sars will enter the contest as underdogs, given Tracton's impressive record in the round robin series. An outbreak of flu in the Sars camp has disrupted preparations, but hopefully, all the girls will have recovered in time for the big match. The girls have the belief that they can upset the form book and come out with a victory on Saturday evening. A big support would help the girls enormously. Hope to see you all there!!!

Sarsfields U10's were victorious in the Mick Cashman Cup on Saturday 26th September. Sars beat Na Piarsaigh in the final. The captain on the day was Ryan Butler. Congratulations to all involved.
Sarsfields, the reigning Evening Echo sponsored Cork senior hurling county champions, will get the chance to defend their title against Newtownshandrum after holding off the challenge from CIT in the second semi final which was played in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday afternoon as the curtain raiser to the county senior football final. Conditions were perfect for the game and with a fine crowd present the champions proceeded to test the students from the off.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Emer O'Farrell who who an all-Ireland Camogie medal with Cork last weekend.
Sarsfields hurling and camogie clubs would like to wish Emer O'Farrell the very best of luck
in Sunday's All Ireland Senior Camogie Final against Kilkenny. According to Emer, "both
defensively and in attack we will have to put in a top performance or else we know the cup
won't be coming back to Leeside with us.
The fact we are in our eight final in a row won't
matter a damn if we lose on Sunday. "I still think that there is still a bad taste after we
lost in the final two years ago and I for one don't want to experience* that feeling again.
We played well that day but the hunger and desire that Wexford had was unbelievable. "It will
be the same on Sunday from Kilkenny and we will have to surpass that to win.
The feeling we
all had after losing two years ago still drives us on as we face into what will be another
tough game for us. "But we have the squad to deal with this and the experience we have gained
over the eight years should stand to us. We know what we have to do and all will be geared up
for the challenge ahead."
It is obvious from talking to Emer about her passion for the game
and as well as Cork her club means a lot to her. "My club is my world and without them I
wouldn't have been lucky enough to get where I have without my club. I joined Sars when I
was nine and haven't looked back since then. In my younger days at the club I was lucky
enough to have the likes of Liz Dunphy and Breda Kenny training me. "To have players like
this training you can only inspire you and when they won the All-Ireland one year when I was
nine or 10 I managed to get on the bus for the homecoming.

East Cork Junior A Hurling Final - Sarsfields 2-11 Castlemartyr 0-23
A very dissappointing second half display saw Sarsfields lose out to
Castlemartyr in this year's East Cork Junior A Hurling Final. After a good opening half,
Sars lost their way in the second period. Sars looked sharper in the opening exchanges, and when Garvan McCarthy rattled the net with the first goal of the game, Castlemartyr found themselves 5 points in arrears. An Eoin O'Sullivan goal helped Sars to a 5 point half time lead. In the second half Castlemartyr gained momentum and it seemed everything they hit went over. Castlemartyr dominated and eventually ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-23 to 2-11. Click here for match pictures.

The Sarsfields U12 hurlers defeated Killeagh in the East Cork Final on a scoreline of 6.13 to 4.05. The captain on the night was Luke Hackett. Well done to all involved. The U12s now go on to play Bandon in the county championship in approx 2 weeks. Date and venue will be posted here.
The Sars U16 hurlers lost last night to Midleton in the final of the East Cork Championship. 3.12 to 5 points.
Sarsfields and Ballyduff served up an entertaining hours hurling for the first time last night under lights. On this occasion Sars proved a little too strong for the Waterford visitors who themselves had a titanic struggle with Mt. Sion in their Championship tie over the weekend. Click here for photos.
Sars finished second best in this penultimate round robin fixture in Whitechurch last Sunday. Emer O'Farrell cobntributed seven points, and Aisling Whooley scored a well taken goal. Best performers for Sars on the day were Orla Butler, Catriona Barry, Sinead O'Leary and Doris Murphy.
The final round robin fixture is versus Tracton, time and venue TBC.

For the second match in a row, proceedings finished up all square in this round robin tie at Castlelyons last night. After a slow start, Sars gradually got to grips with the pace of the match, having trailed by four points to nil after 10 minutes. Emer O'Farrell then hit 1 02 from placed balls before scoring a good goal from open play. Fr. O'Neills took the lead again in the second half through a penalty which hit the back of the net. Sars kept battling and never gave up.
Their efforts were rewarded when Rita Crolwey sent a rocket to the Fr. O'Neills net from a tight angle, a top drawer goal any forward would be proud of. With the clock ticking down, Emer O'Farrell hit a long range point from a free to leave the final score all square. Sars have goalkeeper Orla Butler, and full backs Aisling Griffin, Sinead O'Leary and Catriona Barry to thank for keeping their unbeaten record in this competiotion intact.
A big improvement will be needed to overcome an experienced Newtownshandrum side in the next round. This game is fixed for next Sunday, 30th August @ 12.00pm, venue TBC.
SARSFIELD'S powered their way into this year's East Cork JAHC final with a blistering performance on Tuesday night in Caherlag.
What a difference three days makes in hurling with a super tight match between these two sides last Saturday night with nothing between them, was contrasted significantly in this replay with Sars dominating.
Early indicators suggested that this was going to be another tight affair with points exchanged up
until the 10th minute.
Early scores for Lisgoold came from Maurice O'Connell, Jonathon O'Shea and David Barry, but the Lisgoold men were always chasing Sars who were never behind.
The Sars early points came from Eoin O'Sullivan, Gary Grey, Pat Barry and Thomas Crowley.
Crowley was the only change on the Sars team from the first match and over the course of the 60 minutes he rewarded his selectors' faith in him by being the top scorer with 1 -3.
Sars pulled away on the 14th minute when they extended their lead to four. O'Sullivan, Barry,
Cian Smith and Cormac Duggan all raised the white flag without reply and on the 23rd minute Garvan McCarthy hammered the into the Lisgoold net, following some neat play and a great set up by Eoin O'Sullivan, leaving six points between the sides.
It seemed an eternity but eventually Lisgoold did reply through their talisman O'Connell on a couple of pointed frees, but Sars finished the first half with two scores from Michael Kenneally and additional points from Crowley and O'Sullivan giving Sars eight points clear at the break.
The second half was all Sars too, goals from Thomas Crowley and Jonathon Kelleher plus a barrage of points really showed a gulf between the sides.
Lisgoold battled to the end, but only managed four points in the second half.
Now September 5 in Rostellan, the venue for this year's final, is all set up for a cracking finale to this year's championship as Sarsfield's take on the very impressive Castlemartyr men to decide who will lift the East Cork title.
Scorers for Sarsfields: T Crowley 1-3, E O'Sullivan 0-4 (0-2f), G McCarthy 1-1, J Kelleher 1-0, P Barry, M Kenneally, G Grey (0-1f, 0-1 65), C Duggan, C Smith 0-2 each, F Burke 0-1. Lisgoold: M O'Connell 0-5 (0-2f) J Cronin, J O'Shea 0-2 each, D Barry, A Conroy 0-1 each.
SARSFIELD'S: W O'Flynn; E Whooley, P Roche, D O'Regan; F Burke, P Fahy, G Grey; J Cashman, C Smith; C Duggan, P Barry, T Crowley; G McCarthy, E O'Sullivan, M Kenneally. Subs: J Kelleher for M Kenneally (39) J Kennedy for G McCarthy (54) C Harrington for E O'Sullivan (55). LISGOOLD: C Cronin; P O'Mahony, B Stack, K O'Shea; C Walsh, C Smart, J O'Connell; B Aherne, D Barry; J Cronin, (J N Connery, A Conroy; M O'Connell J O'Shea, R Smart. Subs: J Hurley for R Smart (23) L Foley for N Connery (27).
Riverstown was no place for the faint hearted this evening when both teams served up a rip roaring contest with Sarsfields edging out their valiant opponents by a one goal margin. In what was generally accepted as being the best under age contest seen at the venue for quite some time, Fr. O'Neills while naturally disappointed have certainly a very promising squad of players with a bright future. For Sarsfields - their Manager Barry Myers and his Management team - this was undoubtedly a sweet victory and now go forward to contest the East Cork Final. Well done to both teams for serving up a really entertaining hours hurling.

Sarsfields on the ball with new web initiative (courtesy of the Irish Examiner)
SARSFIELDS Hurling Club has just completed a major refurbishment of their playing grounds at Riverstown.
The new sand-based pitch and state of the art floodlighting system will ensure all-year-round playing activities at one of Cork's most legendary venues.
After a few months of inactivity because of the development works, the clash of the ash can be heard once again at the pitch known affectionately as the Castle Field.
The county hurling champions, already
through to this year's semi-final against CIT, understandably want to cash in on such a magnificent facility and plan selling advertising space on the pitch surrounds. With a prime viewing location from the superb clubhouse, the club has received many enquiries from potential advertisers.
However, acutely aware of the financial constraints many businesses now face in these recessionary times, the club wants to lead the
way and give value for money.
Explains chairman
Tadhg Murphy: "We are conscious our club website is one of the most popular GAA sites in the country and last year had a total of 982,000 hits with 12,600 unique visitors.
On the strength of that, website administrator
Damien"O'Regan suggested giving advertisers year round exposure on the website and also provide the opportunity to set up links to their own websites through this medium."
Murphy points to the large overheads facing all clubs now and emphasises the need for exploring all avenues to help in fund-raising. He believes that for an initial cost of €500 (including the cost of the sign) and an annual fee thereafter of €300 advertisers are getting a good bargain.
• Those wishing to avail of the opportunity can contact: Chairman Tadhg Murphy at 087-2538192 or tadhgmurphycork@gmail.com or Club Secretary Jim Murphy at 086-2597150 or

Sarsfields Hurling Club has just completed a major refurbishment of their playing grounds at Riverstown. The new sandbased pitch and state of the art floodlighting system will ensure all year round playing activities at one of Cork's most famous and legendary venues. Yes, the sound of the clash of the ash can be heard once again at the pitch known affectionately as "The Castle Field".
With excellent viewing areas, together with a prime viewing location from the comfort of the clubhouse, it is not surprising that interest has been expressed in availing of advetisement space in the surrounds of the pitch. However, in recessionary times Sarsfields are anxious to give value for money and maybe something extra to compliment the 18' x 3' advertisement board. Explains Chairman Tadhg Murphy " we are concious that our club website is possibly one of the most popular in the country and last year had a total of 982,000 hits with 12,600 unique visitors. So website administrator Damien O'Regan suggested why not give our pitch advertisers all year round exposure on our website and also provide the opportunity to set up links to their own websites through this medium. This is precisely what we are doing and for an initial cost of €500 (which includes the cost of the sign) and an annual fee thereafter of €300. So far the response has been extremely positive".

East Cork Junior Hurling Championship Quarter Final
Sarsfields 1-18 Dungourney 2-11
An impressive second half display by Sarsfields saw them advance to the East Cork Junior Hurling semi-final following a win against Dungourney on Sunday evening. Dungourney started brightly and went 6 points up after 15 minutes, playing with a strong breeze. Sars slowly came back into the game with Cian Smith and Eoin O'Sullivan leading from the front. Points from Cian Smith (2), Garvan McCarthy (1), Cian Harrington (1) and Eoin O'Sullivan (3) ensured Sars went in at the break only a point in arrears.
A much improved second half display saw Sars pull away from their opponents. Pat Barry goaled midway through the half to leave Sars with a healthy lead. With Michael Keneally playing very well, Sars continued to add to their lead. Dungourney scored two goals in the last few minutes to leave 3 points between the teams but man of the match Eoin O'Sullivan scored a free in injury time to seal victory. Sars now play Lisgoold on Saturday 22nd August in the semi final.
Team: William O’Flynn, Philip Fahy, Paul Roche, Eoin Whooley, Fintan Burke, Joe Cashman, Gary Grey, Cian Smith, Damien O’Regan, Michael Keneally, Garvin McCarthy, Cian Harrington, Cormac Duggan, Pat Barry, Eoin O’Sullivan
Sarsfields and Glanmire dual player Paul Hanley married Rita Barry in Dubrovnik, Croatia last Tuesday (11th August 09). Paul and Rita recently returned from Australia, where they are currently working, in order to tie the knot at the Mediterranean resort. Some of the guests at the wedding included Sarsfields and Glanmire players, Ciaran Sheehan, Conor McGrath, Kieran Murphy, John Murphy, Mark Hopkins and Michael Cahalane. Mark Hopkins was best man and John Murphy was groomsman. Plenty of tears were shed on the day, most notably by Mark Hopkins during his very emotional best man's speech. Sarsfields Hurling Club would like to wish Paul and Rita the very best for the future. Click here to view some of the photos.

IT
ALL began back in 1994, Pat Ryan's senior hurling debut for Sarsfields,
one of the best club players this county has ever produced. That debut
was against Na Piarsaigh, a game that the city side prevailed in and
now they stand in his way again of progressing further in this year's
Evening Echo Cork County SHC.
The
landscape is much changed now, Sars are top of the pile, the reigning
champions and a side determined to keep a firm grip on the old
canister. When the draw paired these two sides together the immediate
reaction was that it was a game containing the potential to be the
match of the championship. Sars might be the champions but Piarsaigh
know the requirements too that are involved in landing the title,
winning it in 2004. Click here to read more.

Two late points from Chris Ryan and Derek Looney snatched Sars from the jaws of defeat and secured a place in the East Cork Final where Cobh will provide the opposition. Yes the relief was very visible on the faces of Manager John Barry and his selectors Pat Harrington and John Delaney at the end of a titanic stuggle, and no doubt were very satisfied with the "never say die" attitude which the lads displayed to get over the line on this occasion.

What a cracking contest. Both sides must be congratulated on serving up a really entertaining league final at Riverstown yesterday evening. Heartbreak for O' Neills with a last minute goal tipping the scales tor Sars on this occasion. How often have we heard it said " the game is never over until the final whistle blows " proved yet again in Riverstown this evening. It would be unfair to single out individual displays, this was a team victory with every player giving everything to secure victory. Well done also to Manger Barry Myers and his managenent team. Looks like a very interesting championship to follow! Click here for pictures.

Cork senior Emer O'Farrell was dominant for Sars, notching up a first half goal, while Aisling Whooley grabbed a second. In the opening half, Katie Buckley hit a goal for Mallow in a close opening 30 minutes when driving rain made conditions hard for both teams. With Emer O'Farrell adding five points Sars began to pull away but mallow hit back, Michelle Browne striking 1-1 before the clock ran out.
Its like old times down in Riverstown again with playing activities returning to one of Corks most famous GAA venues. Certainly, former player, contractor Bob O' Keeffe and his able deputy, Peter Barry can feel justifiably proud of their efforts in ensuring that our new sand based pitch is in excellent condition. Matches will continue on a limited scale for the rest of the season with an official opening, under our new state of the art floodlighting system, planned for later in the year. Details to follow. Senior hurling league - Sars 2-14 St Finbarrs 2-14
There are never any winners and most of
all, the player and clubs they represent
are theones who suffer. The bickering,
huffing and puffing takes place in every club,
in every county, every year, with no learnings
taken from previous seasons and no signs of
any side re-aligning their stance.I'm talking
about Hurling and Football selectors clashing
over training and preparation of their individual
teams. Of course, unhelpful fixture lists
can compound the difficulties they face but
that aside, a better solution should be sought
to ensure both teams can prepare properly
without draining their player’s energy levels
and/or causing injury. Click here to read more.
DEFENDING champions Sarsfields served notice at Páirc Uí Chaoimh last night that it will take a very good team to dethrone them after they crushed Ballinhassig in a lively Evening Echo SHC third round tie.
Last year’s success has given this Sars outfit the necessary belief that they can put back-to-back titles together, but there is still a lot of hurling to play which includes a quarter-final clash with Na Pairsaigh before that happens. Click here for more...
To the neutral in the crowd Sars would have appeared to be the more balanced team in Caherlag, with Killeagh’s goalkeeper Ciara Motherway, being the difference between the two teams! Her superb endeavours justly earning her the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Sars played suberb camogie and eventhough, unfortunately didn’t come out on top, gave an exhibition of skilful camogie throughout.

Sarsfields, hurling club held their Gaa social last night at the Vienna Woods Hotel, Glanmire, where in excess of 430 guests celebrated the winning of the Senior and Minor Hurling county double. The senior success saw the “Sean Og Murphy” Cup return to Riverstown after a 51 year absence, while the County Minor cup remains in their possession after back to back wins. Throw in the East Cork U21 A hurling championship for good measure and it has been a fabulous year for the Sarsfields club. Among the guests were Cork county board chairman Gerry O'Sullivan, County Secretary Frank Murphy and Minor Board chairman Diarmuid O'Donovan. Sarsfields club chairman Tadgh Murphy welcomed all those present on this wonderful occasion and he thanked all involved in making both the night and indeed the year such a great success. Sarsfields' chairman Tadhg Murphy presenting Fr Martin Barry, from Glanmire, Co Cork, with a replica of his 1951 Cork County SHC winning medal. Fr Barry, who has spent 40 years in Kenya with the St. Patrick's Missionary Society (Kiltegan Fathers), mislaid the original and Sarsfields ordered a replacement from jeweller and Cork hurling coach Gerald McCarthy.
Plenty of cause for celebrations for Sarsfields in Glanmire, Cork, at this year's end, with the return of the county senior hurling title to the dub after over half a century a bright highpoint in a successful season.
The year now drawing to a close proved an exceptional one for the Sarsfields club. Not only did the senior hurlers emerge from a long barren spell of 51 years, but the minor hurlers retained the county title in thrilling fashion, and the under-21 side went within an ace of making it a clean sweep. Some GAA players go through their careers without winning a single medal at adult level and Sarsfields hurler Brian McCarthy looked to be stuck in that elite group until success in this year's Cork senior hurling championship. Click here for a recent Hogan Stand interview with Brian.

JUST a week after winning the Waterford Championship for the first time, it was to De La Salle’s credit that they survived an absorbing contest with Sarsfields in Páirc Uí Chaoimh yesterday and qualified for the AIB Munster club hurling final. They achieved it with two late pointed frees from star midfielder Brian Phelan and there was no way back for the Cork title-holders at a stage when they had lost the battle for territorial supremacy. Click here for match report and pictures.
THIS is a similar assignment for Sarsfields to their opening round victory over Clare champions Clonlara. On that occasion they were facing a side who hadn't won their county title in 89 years and they faced them exactly a week after doing so. It will be the same here, De La Salle from Waterford coming good for the first time in their own county in 90 years after defeating Abbeyside in last Sunday's final. Click here for preview.
Sars progressed to the semi final of the Munster Club Hurling Championship after a comprehensive victory against Clare champions Clonlara in Páirc Uí Chaoimh today. Points from man of the match Pat Ryan, Robert O'Driscoll and Michael Cussen gave Sars a 7 point lead at the break.
Sars never let up in the second half and responded to anything Clonlara had to offer. Ryan kept the scoreboard ticking over and along with Ronan Murphy and Cian McCarthy, helped Sars into the semi final, where they will face the Waterford champions in two weeks time at the same venue. "BUILD it and they will come" has plainly been the motto of the Sars-fields hurling club over the last 20 years. They have built and they have come in their droves. Last night the incoming GAA president Christy Cooney officially launched the latest stage of development of the facilities in Riverstown. These include floodlighting, re-draining and upgrading of the pitch to a sand-based surface, so the famous old pitch will be able to house night games from the summer of 2009. Click here for report and pictures. Further Development Draw details will appear here shortly.
AS Sarsfield's captain Daniel Roche collected the Ulster Bank Premier MHC cup last Saturday night one man stood on the far side of the pitch reflecting on their win. Click here for more.
Sarsfield's development draw launch takes place next Wednesday night - 8.30pm
The Sarsfields development draw launch will take place next Wednesday 29th October in the Sars clubhouse at 8.30pm. The draw is being lauched to raise funds for the re-drainage and upgrading of our main pitch to a sand based surface. In addition, we are installing a floodlighting system which will hopefully allow us all year round use.
The total cost of this project will be circa €350,000 and will be launched by the incoming President of the GAA Mr. Christy Cooney. Everyone Welcome.
Sarsfields have successfully retained the Ulster Bank premier minor hurling title after defeating Duhallow on a scoreline of 3-09 to 0-09 in Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday night. Sars made light of the difficult playing conditions and outplayed their north Cork opponents throughout the pitch. Sars dominated the opening period and went ahead with points from Shane O'Driscoll and Daniel Roche. A goal from corner forward David Crowley gave Sars a healthy lead going in at half time. A strong performance from the Sars full back line of Thomas Crowley, Cian Smith and Shane Corbett nullified any threat that Duhallow's forwards provided. Duahllow came more into the game in the second half and was it not for some missed goal scoring opportunities they final scoreline would have been much closer. Further goals from David Crowley and sub Anthony O'Leary cemented the victory for Sars. Most impressive for Sars were Shane Corbett, Gary Gray, Daniel Roche, David Crowley and Eoin O'Sullivan. Sarsfield's club members visit Billy Flynn with the county cup
Sarsfield's club members recently visited the home of life-long supporter Billy Flynn with the Sean Óg Murphy cup. Billy is a ledgend with the Riverstown Foot Beagles. In attendance were Sars captain, Kieran Murphy, club president Denis Hurley, secretary Jim Murphy, senior selectors, Paddy Lambe and Teddy McCarthy along with Billy's wife Betty.
After guiding his beloved Sars to a first Evening Echo SHC in 51 years, Bertie Óg Murphy was a deserved September winner of the 96 FM C103 GAA Sports Star of the Month, in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel. Murphy, who masterminded the highly significant back-to-back All-Ireland U21 wins of 1997-98, once again proved his skill at nurturing young talent. The East Cork club won a thrilling county championship, defeating Ballinhassig, Cloyne, Newtown, the Glen and Bride Rovers and played some exciting hurling. Click here for more.
Sars are out of the Cork U21 hurling championship after being beaten by Glen Rovers by five points in Pairc Uí Rinn tonight. In a tight game the Glen scored a crucial goal with only a few minutes left. Before that, Sars seemed to be building momentum after Eoin O'Sullivan goaled with 10 minutes left to leave two points between them. However, the Glen held out in the end with some very strong defending. Craig Leahy, Daniel Kearney, Daniel Roche and Eoin O'Sullivan played best for Sars on the night. The Glen now go forward to the county final to meet Duhallow.
As you are probably aware we have now commenced work on the final phase of our development which sees the re-drainage and upgrading of our main pitch to a sand based surface. In addition, we are installing a floodlighting system which will hopefully allow us all year round use.
The total cost of this project will be circa €350,000 and on the Wednesday 29th October the incoming President of the GAA Mr. Christy Cooney will be launching our Development draw to help alleviate the cost of this project. Everyone Welcome.
We are currently setting up teams to help with a local canvass to promote this draw and a meeting will take place at the pavilion on Monday next the 20th October at 9pm to formalise the teams under the team leaders who have already been appointed.
Perhaps you may be in a position to give a hand out with this canvass in your particular area and we would really appreciate your attendance.
The County U21 semi-final between Sarsfields and Glen Rovers, fixed for tonight has been called off due to bad weather. Details of the refixture will be posted here.
A Message from Dermot Desmond - Glasgow Celtic shareholder and former Sars player
Well done everyone at Sarsfields on winning the County Championship. It has been a long time coming but well deserved for all those who have shown commitment, application and loyalty to a great club. I can’t tell you how delighted I was that you made the final but to win was incredible. I am so proud to have played a small part in the life of Sarsfields and I congratulate you all on this great achievement. I will always be a supporter of your great Club until the day I die.
A spirited second half comback from Glen Rovers helped them to snatch a draw against Sarsfields in the Cork County U21 semi final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh yesterday. Sarsfields started brightly and points from Eoin O'Sullivan and Pat Barry put them in front. A well taken goal by Barry gave Sars a 1-10 to 1-05 lead at the break. The Glen came out with renewed hope in the second half. However, Sars managed to keep the gap between the two teams with points from Rob O'Driscoll and Daniel Roche. Pat Horgan helped reduce the defecit with two well take goals, the first from a penalty and the second after cutting inside from the half forward line. IN A SUN-DRENCHED Carrigtwohill, after a 35 minute delay, Sarsfields kept their focus to give a highly impressive display over rivals Midleton in this Jones' Engineering East Cork U21A final. Pat Barry and Paudie O'Shea swapped early points, but the Riverstown outfit were quick to race into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead until one of Midleton's most impressive players on the day Paul Haughney scored a fabulous score out by the right touch line. "WOULD you ever stop reporting on all those other sports, you're getting me into all sorts of trouble!" laughs Denis Hurley, president of Sarsfields Hurling Club. The confusion seems to only work one way, though, as nobody has ever congratulated me on being a selector on All-Ireland winning Cork teams in four different decades. Denis was on' the last Sars team to win a SHC, in 1957, and can still recall an awful lot from that year.
WHEN interviewed by the Evening Echo the week before Cork played Tipperary this year, Kieran 'Fraggie' Murphy was asked how he rated Sarsfields' chances of county success this year. He answered: "Down in Sars we're always optimistic, we're always looking to win counties. We don't enter the championship just to survive, we've a lot of winners, all we're talking about is just progressing in the championship." Click here for more.
Come on Sars!

SUNDAY’S SHC final is not about ending a lengthy famine for the present day hurlers of Sarsfields but creating their own bit of history, according to star midfielder and one of the veterans of the side, Pat Ryan. Ryan was a member of the team that lost the 1997 final to Imokilly and has been one of the club’s greatest ever servants and winning his first county senior medal on Sunday would represent the greatest achievement in a long and distinguished career with his club and with Cork. “It would be nice to put the famine thing to bed, but I wouldn’t say that it is a huge motivational factor. “I think if Erin’s Own had managed to get to the final again they’d be trying just as hard and they have won it twice in a row. “I think it’s just about creating your own bit of history and getting your own county title.” Ryan believes that their place in next Sunday’s all East Cork final is a vindication for a lot of hard graft done on the training ground. “The training has been very tough, but in fairness it is not just us who are doing it, Bride Rovers have been doing the same and putting in the same effort.”

Sarsfields minor hurling reached the premier county final following a four point win against Midleton in Carrigtwohill tonight. The teams went in level at the break, Sars 1-05, Midleton 0-08. However, Sars produced an outstanding second half display, with Eoin O'Sullivan and Thomas Crowley to the fore. Sars now meet either Duhallow or Douglas in the county final.

A courageous second half performance gave Sarsfields a deserved three point victory over Glen Rovers today. The Glen started brightly and went ahead mainly through the stick of Pat Horgan. However Sars got themselves back into the game with a fortuitous goal from Daniel Kearney. Sars got a penalty just before halftime but Pat Ryan's effort was saved. The Glen led 0 -10 to 1-4 at halftime. Sars tore into the game in the second half and with the help of sub Michael Cussen, took the game to their opponents scoring six points without reply. A goal from Cian McCarthy gave Sars a lead they wouldn't relinquish. An outstanding defensive display in the closing minutes enabled Sars to reach their first county final in 11 years. They now meet Bride Rovers in the final.
Sarsfields had a great victory today at Riverstown when they beat a gallant Millstreet side by the narrowest of margins after a pulsating tie that was only decided after extra time.
While Cathal Duggans point gave Sars the initiative in extra time, the two vital scores were goals notched by Shane Harrington and Paul McCarthy in the closing stages. The entire Sars team played their part which sees us go forward to a semi-final contest, undoubtedly our star performer on this occasion was outstanding defender Neil Crotty. Congrats to all concerned.

East Cork Under 11 Final Thursday 11th @ 6.15 in Carrigtwohill – Sars vs Fr. O'Neills
Fraggy thrilled with his side's second-half performance
IT'S 1957 since Sarsfields last won the SHC but there's a quiet confidence this time around that they have a panel of players that can end the 51-year famine, and bring the Sean Óg Murphy Cup back to Glanmire. After passing the Newtownshandrum test, it's the Glen next weekend and Cork star, Kieran 'Fraggie' Murphy has played a big part in his club's progression to the semi-final. Sars went in two points down at half-time but a considerably improved second-half performance left Newtown trailing in their wake.
Kieran Murphy played a big part in his team's success, and he feels the goal early in the second half gave them the boost they needed. "It was important we kept our composure. We had plenty of goal chances in the first half and we knew we just needed to keep working hard and it would come good in the second half. That proved to be the case.
"We certainly upped it after the break, we really didn't get going in the first half, but we got a lucky break with the goal and it made a huge difference. But Newtown were still there at the end, and they had a few goal chances. If they had taken one of them we might have been in trouble." Murphy said it was great to get back into competitive club action after Cork's defeat to Kilkenny in the All-Ireland. "It's difficult for the clubs focused because of the inter game but that's something y have to get on with. We were play last week but because Cork footballer's replay, we be put back another week, can't complain It's great to playing championship hurl this time of the year so we'll when we get it."
Tomas Mulcahy's rejuvenated Glen Rovers now stand in the way of a place in the final, and Murphy is wary of that test. "The Glen are a strong side. They've had some great wins this year and they'll be a lot fitter and hungrier than anything we've faced so far. It's going to be a tough task for us to come back out again next week but we're looking forward to it and it's great to be in the semi final,” commented Murphy.
After a storming second half display, Sarsfields progress to the county semi final showdown with Glen Rovers following their four point win against Newtown in Pairc Ui Chaoimh today. Sars did not start well and were a goal down after only a few minutes. However they battled willingly to go in at the break only two points down, 1-08 to 0-09. Sars turned the match in their favour in the second half. A goal by Tadgh Óg Murphy levelling matters at 1-09 a piece. Sars took off from there and finished the stronger team, winning by four points. Sars now take on Glen Rovers next weekend for a place in the county final.
Sarsfields: Alan Kennedy, Ray Ryan, Joe Barry, Conor O'Sullivan, Daniel Kearney, Craig Leahy, Brian McCarthy, Kieran Murphy, Pat Ryan, John Murphy, Ronan Murphy, Cian McCarthy, Robert O'Driscoll, Pat Barry, Tadgh Óg Murphy.
SLOWLY but surely, things are starting to fall into place for Sarsfields as they bid to come in from the wilderness in the Cork County SHC roll call of honour. It's been over a half-century since Sean Óg Murphy last went east to Riverstown and Glanmire. Click here for more.
A late goal from substitute Anthony O Leary gave Sars a somewhat flattering 5 point victory in tonights quarter final in Carrigtwohill. This was a tough encounter with Shane Corbett, Cian Smith, James Burke, Shane O Driscoll and goalkeeper Cathal Duggan giving impressive displays. They now face Championship favourites Midleton in the semi-final. Click here for the match report.
An exceptionally strong Midleton 15 proved too strong for a gallant side who fought all the way in a very entertaining East Cork Final played at Killeagh. While sarsfields may feel disappointed with the result, they can look back on this campaign with great satisfaction having achieved some great results on their way to the final. While all players played themselves to a standstill, Connell Smith, Niall McCarthy and Eamonn Foley were particularly prominent. However, the accolade of "man of the match" award must go to outstanding goalkeeper Fanahan McSweeney who gave a sublime performance between the posts. Congratulations to Midleton on their victory and we wish them well in their quest for premier County honours. Sarsfields now go forward to contest the U16 A County Championship.
The Sarsfields and Glanmire club lotto was won last Monday night after a 79 week rollover. The €16,800 prize was won by Mary Coakley, a regular lotto player from Dillons Cross. The presentation was made in the Sarsfields clubhouse tonight. In attendance were Sars and Glanmire representatives along with Mary and her family. See the report and presentation photos here.

Sarsfields U16 hurlers qualified for the U16 East Cork Final by virtue of a 1 point victory over a gallant Castlelyons 15 played in Rostellan tonight. At half time Sars again led by the minimum, 1-5 - 0-7. The second half was a real closely contested affair with Sars emerging victorious on the scoreline 1-13 to 1-12. On a night when all players played their part, Anthony O'Leary took the scoring honours with a personal contribution of 10 points. Well done to team mentors Gearoid Duggan, John Barry, and Pat Harrington on bringing these lads to the East Cork Final. They await the winners of the Midleton V Carrigtwohill semi final which will be played on Friday next. The final is scheduled for Monday next 18th August.

The senior hurling league game between Sarsfields and Glen Rovers, fixed for tomorrow night in Riverstown, has been called off. The game which also doubles up as the Micka Brennan Cup final will be refixed at a later stage.
A disapointing display by Sarsfield's second team saw them defeated by Killeagh in the East Cork Junior A hurling championship in Midleton. After a strong opening Sars left Killeagh back into the game, with Mark Landers scoring two goals from close in frees, either side of half time. Sars tried hard with Eoin O'Sullivan keeping them in the game with a number of frees. A Gary Grey goal in injury time came too little too late as Killeagh held out for a one point win.
Sarsfield's Daniel Roche Captains Cork to Munster Minor Final Win
Sarsfield's Daniel Roche today captained the Cork Minor Hurling team to a Munster Final win over Tipperary. Winning by 0-19 to 0-18, Cork deserved their hard fought victord at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick. Roche captained the team from midfield and played a key role throughout. The team also included Cian Smith at corner back and Eoin O'Sullivan on the bench.
