Sarsfields Camogie Club

History of Sars Camogie

Sarsfields Camogie Club first played camogie in the Riverstown/Glanmire area back in the 1940's however no records are readily available for this period. The Club re-grouped in 1968 when a number of interested people, namely Phil Crowley (present President), Marie Kearney (present Vice-President), Mary Canavan, Breda McCarthy and Mary Kelleher came together to put things in motion. The Club affiliated with the Cork Camogie Board in 1969 and officially competed at Junior level. The committee met in Mary Kelleher's house in the evenings to sew up the customary black gymslips. The team colours were those of sister club, Sarsfields Hurling i.e. royal blue, white sash across the chest and black trim. At that time camogie players were obliged to wear the customary black gymslip as opposed to the men's shorts.

Mick Barry a legend in the Glanmire/Sarsfields clubs for his work at underage level took over the role of trainer and he set about the task of teaching the girls their ‘hurling' skills. The men folk proved very supportive and huge turnouts for the camogie matches ensued. It took no less than four years before their first major achievement – the Cork County Junior Championship in 1973 against Eire Og.

In 1977 the Club's second string won the Cork County Junior B Championship title and in 1979 took the County Intermediate honour, once again beating Eire Og in the final. It took 10 years at senior level before the County Senior Championship was achieved against a fancied Glen Rovers team in 1989. At underage level an U16 county title in 2005 and an All-Ireland Feile D honour in 2006 when Cork hosted the competition has ensured a confident future for the club at adult level.

Deckie Guckian U10 Street Leagues

Michelle Barry, Captain Winning Team Receives Denis Barry Memorial Cup from Kieran Murphy

Splendid weather in Riverstown helped add to the sense of occasion for the final of our Camogie Street Leagues held on Sunday, 22nd June last. It was a great day for all our younger players as they took to the playing field to ensure the large attendance enjoyed two closely contested matches.

This year we were delighted to have Deckie Guckian on board as our Sponsor. Now in it's third year, we had four teams challenging for the Denis Barry Memorial Cup. (A) Corkelles; (B) Cul Cailins; (C) Glanna-Girls & (D) Rebelles. Each team was managed by two ‘Bainisteoiri' and our Caílini Og (U7's) were marshalled in turn by our Junior Bainisteoiri (U12 players). Prior to and at half time in each game our Caílini Og entertained the crowd with a mini exhibition game which was often the highlight of the day.

Played on a Round Robin basis over the month of June, all teams played 3 games in the lead up to the Finals. The eventual winning team, Corkelles emerged with full points to play Glanna-Girls in the final. Rebelles & Cul Cailins qualified for the plate final.

FINALS

Corkelles 4.1 Glanna Girls 2.1

Corkelles's captain, Michelle Barry played a major role in all four games and was the main instigator of her team's victory. Her cousin, Melissa Barry finished off two goals with Claire Gillen & Donna Kerrigan getting one each. Michelle scored the only point from a great free. Shona McCarthy at full back was rock solid and others to impress were Jessica Long, Jennifer Johnson, Tara Cosgrove & the McCarthy sisters, Ruth & Ally. Younger players Lucy Cashman & Emily Hyde are names we'll hear more from in the future.

Glanna Girls's The skilful Lucy Kelly was everywhere! She was always a threat and scored 1.1 on the day. Hollie Ferguson was their effective target woman up front scoring her team's second goal. The O'Brien twins (Aisling & Sinead ) & Lyons (Kelly & Jessie) ensured Corkelles never felt comfortable in their lead and kept the pressure on time & again. Jane McAllen, always a threat was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Tamar Hawe Levy, ever reliable in goal got great assistance from Becky O'Driscoll, Erica Maloney Sheehan & Chelsea Thomas.

Rebelles 4.0 Cul Cailins 3.0

A closer contest, Rebelles's Ciara O'Sullivan was probably the difference between the two teams. Roisin O'Donovan's long puck outs always found Ciara who ended up with a hat-trick! The skilful Edel Lonergan scored the fourth. Hilary O'Sullivan & Aoife Owens impressed at mid field & got great back-up from Katelyn Dooley & Rachel McElligott. Speed merchants Edel Kelleher, Analise Murphy & Sophie O'Leary will give future opponents nightmares!

Cul Cailins were probably the more skilful of the four teams but in the earlier rounds just couldn't find the posts! Yet on Final day, the scores came easily enough from Maebh Mullins (2) and Shauna Heggveit (1). Maebh & younger sister Claire linked up well throughout the campaign, guaranteed of plenty supply from superb defenders Kelsey Mullane, Ciara Crowley & Megan O'Sullivan. Rebecca Spencer at midfield always kept the ball moving ensuring Ally Barry, Claire Mullins & Bronagh Power got plenty supply inside.

CAILINI OG (U7s)

Before each street league match and again at half time our U7s played mini exhibition 6-a-side games. These young girls demonstrated their ever improving skills to parents, grand-parents, siblings, family, friends, etc. Very competitive and most enjoyable! Our stars of the future : Nicky Barry, Anna Cosgrove, Clionadh Waters, Molly Lynch, Elanna Hawe-Levy, Tessa Maloney Sheehan; Abbie Healy, Aisling Crowley, Rebecca Morgan, Sophie Barry & Olivia Twomey.

PRESENTATION

Our own Emer O'Farrell was Cork-tied on the day so couldn't be present. Who better than Sars & Cork Senior Hurler, Kieran (Fraggie) Murphy to present all players with their medals? In addition, this year Kieran had the onerous task of presenting seven players with Special Skills Awards for various moments of camogie excellence witnessed over the four weeks. The recipients were: Emily Hyde, Gillian Looney, Shauna Heggtveit, Jessie & Kelly Lyons, Edel Lonergan & Emily Walsh. Well done girls!

Finished up the day with some lovely sugary delights courtesy of kind sponsor Deckie Guckian. Deckie at this stage is synonymous with underage tournament sponsorship. Much appreciated, Deckie!

U12 D County Final

(Saturday, 30th August, Coachford)

Ballinhassig 4-1 Sarsfields 0-0

Unfortunately this team, which was unbeaten all year, came up against much stronger & more skilful opponents on the day. We had no answer to their running forwards and all the damage was done in the first half. Credit to our girls, they knuckled down in the second half and held Ballinhassig scoreless. We have no complaints, this team gave us tremendous hours of camogie during the year and the club is very proud of what they have achieved. Considering it is our second team and most of the players are eligible to play U12 again next year, things are looking up! Well done girls.

Team : Katie Stacey, Rachel Kelleher, Lauren Casserley (Capt), Kate Hedderman, Ciara Mullane, Katie Barry, Shona McCarthey, Hollie Herlihy, Maeve McCarthy, Michelle Barry, Jessica Quirke, Courtney McCarthy, Ciara Tobin, Aoife O'Sullivan & Lucy Kelly. Subs: Ciara Ryan, Maebh Mullins, Hannah McCarthy, Gillian Looney, Chloe Casey, Emma Casey, Rebecca Hyde, Jessica Long, Claire Gillen, Emma Gillivan, Roisin O'Donovan & Amy Turpin.

Junior A Championship (Round 4)

(Saturday 30th August, Mahon)

Sarsfields 2-6 Fr O'Neills 1-8

Team : O Butler, T Dwyer, S O'Leary, D Murphy, R Hyde, E O'Farrell, G Donohue, J Murphy, A Whooley, M Kelleher, O Barry, S Crowley, M O'Farrell, E Murphy, A Barry. Subs: L Barry & N Hickey

Scorers : Orla Barry 1-3 ; Emer O'Farrell 1-0, Edel Murphy 0-1; Nicole Hickey 0-1 & Shirley Crowley 0-1

Orla Barry's accuracy from placed balls (1-3) and in particular her injury time free ensured Sars surprised the form book by qualifying for the County Semi-Final. A super game of camogie, Sars battled throughout and never left favourites, Fr O'Neills settle comfortably in their lead. Sars were never ahead in the game but kept in touch & set up a thrilling last five minutes scoring 1-2 to pip a shell-shocked Fr O'Neills by the minimum.

Semi-Final against Clonakilty is scheduled for Sunday, 28 th September.

Sars 3-6 Blackrock 0-9

Scorers : Orla Barry 0-4 (F); E. O'Farrell 1-1, Edel Murphy 1-0; Mairead O'Farrell 1-0 & Shirley Crowley 0-1

Sars were involved in creating history on Tuesday night last, playing in the inaugural match in the new Cork Camogie Grounds, Mahon. Sars started the better team but failed to convert numerous chances. Our defence were under constant pressure in the first 15 minutes but held their own defiantly. Blackrock chose to play two forwards up front which meant Doris Murphy swept up a lot of loose ball. Orla Barry kept us in touch with two well taken frees and one a piece from play from Emer O'Farrell & Shirley Crowley. Eventually the hardwork created by Jenny Murphy & Aisling Whooley showed dividends when Mairead O'Farrell scored a super goal to ensure just the minimum between us going into the break. (Blackrock 0-6; Sars 1-4). On the resumption Sars forwards always looked threatening in front of goal and eventually the score that turned the match decisively in our favour came from Edel Murphy. Edel's first attempt was excellently cleared only for her to retrieve it and solo past the Blackrock defence to rattle the net! Two more converted frees by Orla Barry and a super save at the other end from Orla Butler, put us comfortably in the driving seat. Just before the end a long range clearance from Emer O'Farrell at centre-back went all the way to the net. Game over! Final score Sars 3-6, Blackrock 0-9. Sars now face Fr O'Neills in Round 4 with three wins under their belt.
